It is a well used line among the anti-vaccers, “I know my own child! I know what is best for them!” This is usually followed by “I’ve done my research.”
In a recent study conducted by The Spudd, family physicians and anti-vaccers who have “done their research” were each given a quiz about vaccines and how they work. The quiz consisted of 6 questions about the immune system and vaccines. Physicians scored an average of 5.8/6 (95% CI 5.3-6.0, p<0.0003) while anti-vaccine parents scored an average of 1.3/6 (95% CI 0.4-1.6 p<0.0004).
“It turns out that perhaps doctors actually know your child a little better than you do when it comes to their health,” explain Dr. Sam Napoli. “This also shows us that while anti-vaccers claim to have done their research on vaccines and the immune system, they really have no clue how it works.”
