Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine considering raising GPA entrance requirement to 1.3

TEMPE, AZ – The Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (SCNM) has long been a beacon for undergraduate students who are terrible at school, but still have the dream of one day being called “doctor”. That dream might be getting a lot harder come next September.

The admission committee is tabling a proposal to raise the minimum GPA required for acceptance from 0.8 to 1.3. This would set the bar across all naturopathic schools in North America as the highest GPA requirement of any school.

“We here at SCNM have always prided ourselves on having the very best and brightest C and D students in the country” explained Dean Earl McKenzie. “By raising our standards even higher, we are sending a very clear message: we only want the best of the best at SCNM.”

Other Naturopathic schools are waiting to see what this does to applications and student enrollment before joining SCNM in this unprecedented move.

“We’re going to wait and see how this does next year at SCNM, then we’ll decide if we want to follow suit” said Albert Dullman from the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM). “We rely on having lots of students who are willing to pay a lot of money to get that doctor title, so we want to make sure this won’t hurt our bottom line.”

The new GPA standards will be in place starting September 2015.
