Opinion: Stop feeling guilty! Your genes didn't give you cancer. It was your lifestyle and negative attitude.

By Yaser Ij

For many people newly diagnosed with cancer, the two dominant emotions are fear and guilt. This is clearly understandable, though somewhat misguided, I believe. With new discoveries every day showing what turmeric and garlic can do to cancer cells in a Petri dish, there is reason for optimism that most cancers will soon be treatable.

However, my point in writing this essay is to hopefully lessen the guilt that many cancer patients feel. For their whole lives, they have heard that cancer is primarily a genetic condition. As a result, many cancer patients feel defective and guilty when they receive their diagnosis. While no one would deny that genes play a role in cancer, research is showing that genes are not at the root of the vast majority of cancers.

So this is my message to people: Stop feeling guilty! Your genes did not give you cancer; your lifestyle and negative attitude gave you cancer.

Maybe you smoked and did not exercise. Of course this gave you cancer. Maybe you ate gluten and GMOs. Of course this gave you cancer. Maybe you made sure you were up to date on your vaccines. Of course this gave you cancer. Maybe you used a cell phone or wifi. Of course this gave you cancer. Maybe you just had a negative outlook on life. Of course this gave you cancer.

Clearly, we have a lot to learn about the origins of this disease. But I hope that readers of my essay will gain some piece of mind knowing that their DNA, over which they had no control, did not give them cancer.
