Americans for Aviation Choice question mandatory seatbelts

WASHINGTON, DC – A group of concerned citizens is holding a rally at the US Capitol building to ask for congressional hearings over the behavior of airplane pilots. Ginger Thompson, the leader of “Americans for Aviation Choice,” explained that their platform is simple. “We get told time and time again by pilots and crew to buckle up our seat belts when we take off, when we’re in the air, and when we land. Yet we still land and everyone walks away from the flight unscathed. That type of tyranny in the skies needs to stop. No one is dying from plane crashes nowadays. Crashes are very rare,” she said in a statement during the rally.

When asked what specifically her group wants Congress to do, she stated, “We want Congress to tell pilots and crew to cut it out with the scaremongering. Pilots have too much power and the passengers have no choice but to obey. It’s time that passengers be given a choice of whether or not to wear a seat belt.” Other requests from her group included lowering the nitrogen in the cabin to “at most 10%,” citing a Food Babe article which stated that cabin air was 50% nitrogen. “We pay for the flights, so we should make the rules,” Thompson stated.

Captain Jack “Shelly” Shellenberger, a pilot with over 100,000 hours of flight experience and spokesperson for the American Aircraft Pilots and Crew Association, explained that crashes and deaths in the event of a crash were not as deadly precisely because of the rules in place by the Federal Aviation Administration. “The FAA has given the pilots and crew, the people with the education and experience to operate the planes, the authority to instruct passengers on what to do for a reason,” he said. “We can recognize turbulence and other hazardous situations when we need the passengers to buckle up for their own safety and that of everyone else on board. The last thing you need is a 200-pound body being tossed around the cabin during turbulence. People could get hurt.”

“That’s just Big Airline talking,” Ginger Thompson replied when she heard what Captain Shelly had to say. “You make money off of us hand over fist and you want to also tell us what to do. No more!” she exclaimed.

There was no word from Congress on any hearings on the issue, though one congressional staffer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that his boss is looking into the claims by “Americans for Aviation Choice” as he himself has been ordered to buckle up and sit tight on flights that took off and landed without incident on many occasions.
